Correct steering technique for the driving test

 

During the driving test the examiner will be looking for good control of the steering. Examiners aren't as strict about steering as they once were. Not holding the steering correctly at all times and the odd cross of the hands wont fail your test providing you have good control of the car steering at all times.

It is however good practice to keep the steering tidy and if you're a complete novice, then you will need a guide on where to start. Use the tutorial below as a guide. It doesn't have to be perfect and don't worry if you find it difficult. You will find your own comfortable way of steering. Providing it is tidy and you keep good control at all times.

Your normal driving position should be hold the steering wheel in either the ten to two or quarter to three position as in the diagrams to the right. Practice the steering technique below using a dinner plate.

Steering left
From the ten to two or quarter to three position, grip the wheel with your left hand and release with your right. Pull the wheel using your left hand down to the six o'clock position and meet with the right hand.

Then grip with the right hand and release the left hand. Pull the steering wheel back up to the twelve o'clock position meeting with the with the left hand.

  

Steering right
From the ten to two or quarter to three position, grip the wheel with your right hand and release your left hand. Pull the wheel using your right hand down to the six o'clock position and meet with the left hand.

Then grip with your left hand and release your right hand. Pull the steering wheel back up to the twelve o'clock position meeting with the with your right hand.

The steering technique can be smaller increments of turning the wheel than those shown in the video. Find a technique that is comfortable to you. Providing you can steer the car accurately and safely then it will be acceptable.
